Sanitary sewer overflows
happen every day across the nation. When
they occur they can spread raw sewage into homes and businesses and cause
extensive damage and the risk of disease in both indoor and outdoor environments.
These unpleasant
occurrences can be caused by many factors, but they are typically associated
with sewer pipe blockages caused by pipe breaks or cracks due to tree roots,
system deterioration, insufficient system capacity and construction
mishaps. For those unfortunate enough to
have this occur in their home or place of business there are environmental,
health and safety concerns that need to be addressed. These issues must be properly dealt with, but
they can dramatically add to the costs associated with repairs as compared to
other types of water damage.
Sewage often
contains an array of chemical and microbial contaminants and even dangerous pathogens. These contaminants soak into porous building
materials and can be an immediate potential threat to building occupants. Contaminants may include mold, bacteria,
viruses, parasites, protozoa and household or industrial chemicals.
