Tornado Season Brings Property Damage Across Many Parts of the U.S.

Although tornadoes are more common in certain parts of the United States, they have been reported in all 50 states.  On average, tornadoes cause 70 fatalities and 1,500 injuries in the U.S. each year, but some years see much higher numbers.  In a typical year, over $1 billion dollars in property damage is due to tornadoes.

Although some properties impacted by a tornado may experience complete destruction, many more survive the twister with anywhere from minor to significant damages.  They may be left with issues due to strong winds, hail, heavy rain and even flooding when roofs, walls, windows and plumbing are destroyed or damaged.

Many of these properties can be rebuilt and repaired, but there are potential hazards aside from live electrical wires and leaking gas lines that people need to be aware.  They include the following:

  • Mold can begin to grow in as short as 24 to 48 hours on many types of building materials and household belongings when they become wet.  It’s important to begin drying wet materials as soon as it is safe to do so.  Some nonporous materials can be cleaned and salvaged, but most porous materials should be discarded if mold growth is present.
  • Water damage and flooding caused by a tornado can bring not only rainwater into a property, but also viruses, bacteria and chemical contaminants
  • Asbestos can be found in many materials that were used in older homes and buildings.  When removing debris, these asbestos fibers can become aerosolized.  Inhaled asbestos fibers can cause respiratory disease, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
  • Lead is a concern because it is a highly toxic metal. The disturbance or removal of materials containing lead-based paints from properties may result in elevated concentrations of lead dust in the air.
“Tornadoes can leave a path of destruction that can vary from neighborhood to neighborhood and even house to house,” said Douglas Waldie, President of Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters, LLC. “At Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters, we have teams of professionals that can help property owners get back on their feet and rebuild tornado damaged properties by comprehensively settling insurance claims while taking into account all of the damage and hazards that may exist.  Our insurance and property damage experts help policy holders obtain the most accurate and complete settlement so they can rebuild their homes and businesses and get back to their lives.”

Building Damage from Sanitary Sewer Overflows Can Create Serious Health Concerns and Costly Repairs

Sanitary sewer overflows happen every day across the nation.  When they occur they can spread raw sewage into homes and businesses and cause extensive damage and the risk of disease in both indoor and outdoor environments.

These unpleasant occurrences can be caused by many factors, but they are typically associated with sewer pipe blockages caused by pipe breaks or cracks due to tree roots, system deterioration, insufficient system capacity and construction mishaps.  For those unfortunate enough to have this occur in their home or place of business there are environmental, health and safety concerns that need to be addressed.  These issues must be properly dealt with, but they can dramatically add to the costs associated with repairs as compared to other types of water damage.

Sewage often contains an array of chemical and microbial contaminants and even dangerous pathogens.  These contaminants soak into porous building materials and can be an immediate potential threat to building occupants.  Contaminants may include mold, bacteria, viruses, parasites, protozoa and household or industrial chemicals.

“Experiencing the nightmare of having a sanitary sewer overflow in one’s home or business requires the expertise of professionals who deal with this type of property damage,” said Tom Allen from Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters, LLC.  “These situations need to be handled properly or they can pose a health risk both now and in the future.  At Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters, our insurance claims experts are experienced with helping policy holders who have these types of claims.  We represent only their interests to ensure that insurance companies provide the necessary financial resources to effectively remediate and repair damages so that a clean and healthy indoor environment is the end product for the policy holder.”

Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters to Exhibit at the Maricopa County Home & Landscape Show

For three days, beginning on April 24th, thousands of Arizona residents will head to the Arizona State Fairgrounds for the Maricopa County Home & Landscape Show.  This popular event allows attendees to meet with hundreds of local businesses that provide renovation, repair and construction services for both the inside and outside of their homes and businesses.

One of this year’s most anticipated exhibitors includes the property damage and insurance experts from Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters, LLC.  Their licensed public adjusters will be available to talk with show attendees to explain how anyone who has suffered an insured property loss can engage a public adjuster to ensure that they will be treated fairly by their insurance company.

Unfortunately, when property damage does occur, people who have not employed the services of a public adjuster do not always receive a fair settlement for their insurance claims.  In fact, in an April 2012 article from Consumer Reports, the magazine published an article that discussed how much public adjusters benefit consumers.  The article stated, “…a Florida study of more than 76,000 claims found that policyholders who used one got payments that were 19 to 747 percent larger than those who didn’t…”

In Arizona, people with property damage claims turn to the experts at Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters.  “Many people don’t realize that public adjusters can represent them and handle their claims with no out-of-pocket costs,” said Douglas Waldie, President of Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters, LLC.  “Our experts help policy holders get the maximum value for their claim in the fasted time possible.  We look forward to the show and are offering a limited number of free tickets for people to attend this event.  Anyone who has an insurance claim to discuss with our team is encouraged to contact us and we will provide them with a free pass for the show.”

Hudson Douglas Public Adjusters will be exhibiting at booth #280.
